…the difference between gifs and cinemagraphs is small, but important
So what is the distinction? It’s hard to nail down and I don’t want to create strict rules, but here are some general guidelines:
• A cinemagraph typically isolates movement while the rest of the image is stationary, whereas a regular gif is just a small portion of video, on a loop. An example might be an image where the only movement is the occasional blinking of the subjects eyes.
• A good cinemagraph would also be a good photograph even if there was no movement. The things that define a good photograph also define a good cinemagraph.
• A good cinemagraph doesn’t feel like it’s on a loop. Most gifs loop by definition, but a good cinemagraph somehow tricks us into seeming more alive than a loop. An example might be steam rising from a coffee cup – because steam also perpetually rises from a coffee cup in real life, it feels natural to see it happen in a cinemagraph.
